Our story
Regional expertise that lasts
Roofing Masters was born in 2024 when two experienced tradesmen decided to get back where they belong: on the roof. After years behind desks, both Mathias and Raf missed the work they’d spent decades perfecting. So they did something about it. We started this company to do things differently. Not just offer a service, but offer solutions. Real answers to real problems, delivered by people who know the trade inside out. As a local family business, every dollar we earn stays in Nelson-Tasman. We live here, we raise our families here, and we take genuine pride in protecting the homes around us. This community, the people, the landscape where the mountains meet the sea, it’s why we do what we do

We reinvest in our business so every job gets done right. Our Uniroof 700 robotic welder delivers consistent, factory-quality seams that most companies don’t offer. We carry tools for every task, including building works if something unexpected needs fixing on site. We even engineered and fabricated our own custom membrane handling equipment to safely move heavy rolls and protect our team from injury. And with our own 3.5-tonne vehicle, we deliver materials direct to site on our schedule, not someone else’s. When we show up, we’re ready for anything.

Mathias Alvarez
Mathias brings a unique combination of engineering precision and hands-on roofing experience to every project. Originally from Chile, he spent years managing large-scale mining projects as a Geotechnician, developing deep expertise in site management, safety systems, and project coordination under pressure.
After relocating to New Zealand over 10 years ago, he discovered his passion for membrane roofing and waterproofing. He furthered his skills by completing a second Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, with a thesis focused on applying Lean Construction methodologies to the roofing industry in New Zealand. That research now drives how Roofing Masters operates: streamlined processes, minimal waste, and maximum efficiency from first contact through to final sign-off.
Between them, Mathias and Raf cover every angle: quoting, project planning, quality assurance, and client communication. The combination of engineering precision and 25+ years on the tools means every job is carefully scoped, documented, and delivered right. From custom-built handling equipment to digital QA processes, everything is designed to keep projects on time and on budget.
Beyond the technical side, Mathias is passionate about workplace mental health and about creating a safe, supportive environment on-site. He believes a good job starts with a good team, and that how you treat people matters as much as how you install a membrane.

Raf Dow
Raf has been passionate about roofing throughout his career, starting by learning the trade on pressed metal tiles in the late 90s and expanding into all roofing forms to the present day.
Over 25+ years he has installed everything from single-layer membranes and torch-on systems to long-run metal roofing, asphalt shingles, and architectural cladding across projects throughout New Zealand.His knowledge of the different products and systems used in New Zealand is comprehensive. From torch-on bituminous membranes to warm roof systems, TPO, PVC, and liquid-applied coatings, Raf has worked with them all and understands what performs best in each climate zone and application.
He has come full circle, now running the NZQA Block Courses for Roofing Apprentices as a contract trainer for Vertical Horizonz, delivering Block A through E nationwide. He teaches the next generation of roofers the same standards he applies on site every day: attention to detail, code compliance, and respect for the trade.
On the tools, Raf brings a problem-solving mindset shaped by decades of real-world experience.
There isn’t a roof detail, flashing challenge, or substrate condition he hasn’t seen and solved. His expertise is the backbone of every Roofing Masters project.
